Rebirth…

June 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Peep this when I go out I might want it to be like this….!

The Spirit Tree is an earth friendly carbon neutral burial option for those wishing to have their remains cremated. The concept is quite beautiful actually. The biodegradable cinerary urn has outfitted with a ceramic top perforated with hydration holes. The bottom is a combination of peat moss, dirt, wood chips, and post consumer paper that is biodegradable. The remains and the seeds of a tree, or any plant of your choice, are added to the interior of the urn and it is then placed in the earth outdoors in a fertile location. The ceramic top is weathered away over a long period of time and the tree grows up through the center from within as a living memorial to your loved one.

“The act of restoration can be as simple as replacing something that has aged and died away. Above all it means to heal, to make whole, to reweave broken strands and threads into a social fabric that honors and nurtures life around it. To restore is to make something well again. It is mending the world. People have to believe there is a future in order to look forward.”

Not only is it carbon neutral by offsetting the CO2 created during the cremation process, but it is a great way to continue the circle of life while creating a strong visual and emotional symbol for those wishing to look to the future.  Spirit Tree is a member of the Green Burial Council and can be purchased by contacting them on their website.

Local River, Home storage unit for fish and greens

June 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I really would love to have one of these in my living space f’real freal.I think this is another one of those incredible ideas similar to the seedling system that if it is build with green cost effective technology would be a effectively healthy addition to any home. Here is what the designer Mathieu Lehanneur had to say about it.

The Locavores appeared in San Francisco in 2005 and define themselves as ” A group of culinary adventures who eat food s produced in a radius of 100 Miles (160 Km) around their city”.By doing so they aim to reduce impact to the environment inherient to the transportation of foodstuff, while ensuring their traceability.

Local River anticipates the growing influence of this group( The word locavore made its first appearance in an American Dictionary in 2007) by proposing a home storage unit for live freshwater fish combined with a mini vegetable patch. This DIY Fish-farm-cum-kitchen-garden is based on the principle of aquaponics coupled with the exchange and interdependence of two living organisms-plants and fish.

The plants extract nutrients from the nitrate rich dejecta of the fish.In doing so they act as a natural filter that purifies the water and maintains a vital balance for the ecosystem in which the fish live. The same technique is used on large scale pioneer aquaponics/fish-farms which raise Tilapia ( a food fish from Asia) and lettuce planted on trays floating on the surface of the ponds.

Local River responds to the everyday needs of fresh foods that are 100% traceable. It bets on a return to favour of Farm-raised fresh water fish (trout, eel perch, carp , etc), given the dwindling of many salt water species do to over fishing. It also demonstrates the capacity of fish farmers to deliver their stock live to a private consumer as a guarantee of optimum freshness-impossible in the case of salt water fish that has been netted.

Local River aims to replace the decorative “TV aquarium ” by a equally decorative but also functional “Refrigerator Aquarium”.In this scenario fish and greens cohabit for a short time in a home storage unit before eaten by their keepers, the endplayers in a exchange cycle within a controlled ecosystem.

Seedling: System of Biodegradable Nestling Planters

June 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Yo im a big plant nerd, if you know me you might catch me from time to reading about the medicinal qualities and spiritual assistance different plants have to offer.I also enjoy experiments in growing caribbean and african plants that shouldnt thrive here , and nuturing them.So you can imagine how excited I was when I came across this.I believe that nature and our living spaces shout balance with each other and hopefully with more genius ideas like this that will continue to happen.

This is a great idea from designer Brett Duncan.  It is a system of biodegradable nestling planters.  As the plant grows too large for it’s planter you place the whole planter inside the next larger soil filled planter, and so on, until presumably placing the final planter in the ground.  It is healthier for the plant than repotting because it is less stress on the roots and it is less messy, so less stress on you.  This is a little different than the compressed sphagnum moss (peat moss) planters because they appear to be a little more ridged, and in my opinion, they have a better aesthetic appeal.   There are other biodegradable planters out there but most of the ones I’ve seen are not intended to biodegrade around the plant, instead they are mean to biodegrade in the landfill if you throw them away.

“Just to help explain some of the questions of the project Seedling, the seed starts in a sphere so that it can be surrounded by soil and nutrients, as well as moisture when it is watered to help simulate how seeds germinate naturally.

Each pot has nutrients and soil combined with the biodegradable plastic. This allows for different amounts and concentrations based on the plants growing cycle. For example, the white specs in some of the pots are actually egg shells.

The user can also tell if the plant needs to be watered by picking up the pot. The plastic absorbs a certain amount of the water so the elasticity changes depending on the saturation of the soil.

I wanted to create more of an experience for people taking care of their plants. I believe that plants have been adapting to us for far to long, maybe it’s time we reciprocated the gesture.”  – Brett Duncan

Self-organisation/Counter-economic Strategies

June 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So in my travels through the net I found yet another incredible resource and something to peep.I wanted to put it here for those interested to download. The folks who made it at SuperFlex actually want you to do that…..so there I didn’t thief it incase you were wondering. I had to wait 2 and a half hours to get it as a torrent but you can get it here from off my ftp faster. But I digress here is a write up they did to tell you about it , So I will let them explain …Enjoy!

Self-organisation/Counter-economic strategies is about the many approaches to the creation, dissemination and maintenance of alternative models for social and economic organisation, and the practical and theoretical implications, consequences and possibilities of these self-organised structures. The counter-economic strategies presented here are radical alternatives to classical capitalist economic organisation that exploit, or have been produced by, the existing global economic system.

Essays by ten writers cover a wide cross-section of activity, from new approaches to intellectual property and the implications of the free/open source software movement to political activism and the de facto self-organisation embodied in informal architecture and the so-called black economy.

Self-organisation/Counter-Economic Strategies is not a comprehensive overview or an attempt to unify these diverse interpretations. It is intended as a toolbox of ideas, situations and approaches, and includes many practical examples.
